Is Matsumoto Castle Open at New Year? December 29–31 Closure and January 1–3 Hours

Matsumoto Castle closes December 29–31 and opens January 1–3 with short hours and a free Honmaru Garden. The 2026–27 schedule, events, crowds, trains and what to do on closed days.

Updated October 2026

Yes, Matsumoto Castle is open at New Year, just not every day. The keep and inner garden close on December 29–31, then open on January 1–3 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (last entry 3:00 p.m.), with the Honmaru Garden free and only the keep charging. That pattern held every year we could check (2020, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026). Matsumoto City had not published its 2026–27 notice in October 2026, so treat the 2027 times as expected, not confirmed; the notice usually appears between late November and late December.

The schedule in brief

  • Closed: December 29–31, 2026 (keep and Honmaru Garden). The outer Matsumoto Castle Park and the moat paths stay open, so you can still take the classic photo.
  • Open: January 1–3, 2027, expected 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (last entry 3:00 p.m.), with a free garden and a paid keep (¥1,300 at the gate or ¥1,200 with a timed e-ticket).
  • Back to normal: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last entry 4:30 p.m.) from January 4.
  • When we’d go: January 2 or 3 right at 10:00 a.m., or January 4–8 for normal hours and thinner crowds. On a closed day, the free projection mapping planned for 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. is your evening.
  • Watch out for: museum closures (the Kaichi School from December 29 to January 3 and every winter Tuesday; the Museum of Art from December 28 to January 4), no free ALSA English volunteer guides from December 26 to January 9, the Otemon car park closing on January 1, and New Year train peaks (outbound around December 30, return January 3). Reserve Azusa or Shinano seats early.

Is Matsumoto Castle closed on December 29, 30 and 31?

Yes. Every year the castle closes on December 29–31, its only scheduled closure of the year. Matsumoto City’s official visitor page says the castle is “open every day except year-end (Dec 29–31)”. On those three days the keep and the paid Honmaru Garden are shut, but the outer park (the Ni-no-maru side and the moat paths) stays open, as local tour operator Matsumoto-Experience noted in its 2024–25 notice.

You can still walk the moat, see the red Uzumibashi bridge and photograph the keep reflected in the water with the Alps behind it, free, at any time. You just can’t go inside.

Hours on January 1, 2 and 3, 2027

Expected: 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., last entry 3:00 p.m., on all three days. This had not been officially confirmed for 2027 in October 2026.

The 2026 notice, as relayed on the city’s tourism site, read: “Dec 29–31, 2025: castle closed… For the first three days of the New Year, the Honmaru Garden is open free of charge; keep entry is paid… Jan 1–3, 2026: open 10:00–15:30 (entry until 15:00)… Normal opening from Jan 4.”

Watch the 3:00 p.m. cutoff. It’s 90 minutes earlier than on a normal day. If you’re coming from Tokyo on January 1, a late-morning Azusa still gets you in, but it leaves no slack for lines.

Is the castle free on New Year’s Day?

Partly. On January 1–3 the Honmaru Garden, the lawn directly in front of the keep that normally sits inside the paid area, is free. Climbing the keep is not: adults pay ¥1,300 at the gate or ¥1,200 with an advance timed e-ticket, children of elementary and junior-high age pay ¥400, and preschool children are free.

The free garden is where the New Year atmosphere is: the gate ceremony, costumed samurai, calligraphy tables and the best close-up views of the keep. If you’re short on time or traveling with toddlers, the garden alone makes a satisfying visit. If it’s your first time in Matsumoto, pay for the keep; the original 16th-century wooden interior and the 61-degree staircases are the reason to come.

New Year events at the castle

Matsumoto calls January 1–3 the “National Treasure Matsumoto Castle New Year Celebration Special Opening” (国宝松本城新春祝賀特別公開). Based on recent years (the 2027 program had not been announced in October 2026):

  • New Year Gate-Opening Ceremony (新春開門の儀), January 1, about 10:00 a.m. at the Black Gate (Kuromon). The Omotenashi-tai hospitality squad, in samurai, princess and ninja costume, leads a call-and-response before the heavy gate swings open. The official 2023 program listed it as “10:00 to about 10:10, in front of the Black Gate”. In 2026 the Shimin Times described the crowd “cheering and thrusting their arms forward” before filing in for photos with the cast. Arrive by 9:40 a.m. for a front spot.
  • Kakizome (first calligraphy of the year), January 1. In 2026 it ran in two sessions, morning and afternoon, in the Honmaru Garden, with practice and final paper provided at tables facing the keep. Participants stamped their work with a “National Treasure Matsumoto Castle” seal and a zodiac seal. 2027 is the Year of the Sheep (未), so expect sheep motifs.
  • Kojo Taiko drumming (国宝松本城古城太鼓), January 3, 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. It was scheduled at exactly these times in both 2025 and 2026, each set lasting roughly 20–30 minutes.
  • Earlier extras that may or may not return: photo sessions with armored warriors and the mascot Alp-chan (January 1–2, 2023), a calligraphy performance by the Matsumoto Arigasaki High School calligraphy club (January 2, 2023), and in some pre-COVID years a free commemorative pin badge. The 2022 notice said badges would not be handed out that year.
  • Decorations: the Kuromon and Taikomon gates get kadomatsu pine decorations and shimenawa sacred ropes, and the castle performs purification rites at year’s end, according to the castle’s own seasons page.

How crowded is Matsumoto Castle on January 1–3?

Busy, but nowhere near Golden Week. We couldn’t find any published New Year wait-time statistics, so here’s what we know:

  • Peak-season waits are severe. The Chunichi Shimbun reported that at about 10:00 a.m. on May 4 (Golden Week), the wait to climb the keep for people with paper tickets “reached a maximum of 180 minutes”. TV Shinshu, citing the castle management section, reported that Golden Week attendance peaked at 4,801 people on Sunday, May 3. Obon commonly sees 1–2 hours.
  • New Year is different. The later 10:00 a.m. start bunches everyone at opening. Japanese travel blog tooomato.com says January 1–3 gets “somewhat crowded, because it overlaps with hatsumōde visitors at nearby shrines”, while December 28–30 and January 4 onward are “often comparatively quiet”. The castle is closed on December 29–30, though, so the quiet days that matter are December 28 and January 4 onward.
  • The keep has a hard capacity cap for structural safety, so on busy days staff hold groups outside. That’s why waits grow even when the garden looks calm.

When to go:

  • Best: January 4–8 at 8:30 a.m. You get normal hours and the post-holiday lull, and the Alps are often crystal clear on cold winter mornings.
  • If you must go January 1–3: January 2 or 3, in line at the Black Gate by 9:45 a.m. Or go after 2:00 p.m., when families have left, keeping the 3:00 p.m. last entry in mind.
  • Avoid: January 1 between 10:00 a.m. and noon if you hate crowds, unless the ceremony is the reason you came.

The official site (matsumoto-castle.jp) shows the current wait to the keep entrance; check it before you leave the hotel. Our guide to what to expect on a Matsumoto Castle tour covers how long a visit takes.

Should you buy the timed e-ticket for New Year?

Yes, if your date and time are fixed. The official e-ticket costs ¥1,200, ¥100 less than at the gate. It lets you book a 30-minute entry slot up to three months ahead and uses a dedicated route through the Honmaru Garden to the keep, so you skip the paper-ticket line. Since March 2025 only timed tickets are sold online. Reports differ on slot sizes: the Shinano Mainichi Shimbun reported 60 per 30-minute slot when the switch was announced, and a later Chunichi Shimbun report gave 100 per 30 minutes. Either way, holiday slots go fast.

The catch: no changes, no cancellations, no refunds. If snow delays your Azusa, you keep the ticket but lose the slot, and you join the general line.

We couldn’t verify whether e-ticket slots are released for the shorter January 1–3 hours, or whether the dedicated route operates while the garden is free. Bookings open about three months ahead, so January 1–3 slots would appear around early October. Check the booking calendar, and if January 1–3 isn’t listed, buy at the gate; a January 4–10 slot runs on normal hours.

English guides at New Year

The free ones are off. The castle’s official site says ALSA (Alps Language Service Association) volunteer guides are “unavailable between August 11–17 and December 26 to January 9”. ALSA normally waits by the Black Gate offering free tours in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese, so there’s no free English guiding from December 26, 2026 through January 9, 2027.

To fill the gap, book a paid guided tour in advance and check that your date shows availability. The Matsumoto Castle Town Walking Tour is the cheapest English-guided option at $62, rated 4.9/5 from 79 reviews, castle admission included (read our breakdown). The Matsumoto Castle Tour & Samurai Experience costs $86 and is rated 4.9/5 from 184 reviews, and adds a sword lesson (read our breakdown). Pick the walking tour for the castle town on a budget, the samurai tour if the hands-on hour matters more to you. Both include the keep, which is closed December 29–31. Some local operators also close over New Year: Matsumoto-Experience, for example, shut from December 31 to January 2 in each of the last two seasons and ran limited tours on December 29–30 and January 3. Our English-guided tours guide compares every option.

Museums closed over New Year

This is where New Year visitors lose money. The castle opens January 1–3, but its partner museums don’t:

VenueNew Year closureAlso note

The Castle + Kaichi School combo e-ticket (¥1,600) and the 4-venue combo (castle, Kaichi School, City Museum and Museum of Art, ¥2,600) look like good value. If your only castle day is January 1–3, buy a castle-only ticket. Use the combos from January 4, and skip Tuesday January 5 if the Kaichi School is on your list.

What to do if you arrive December 29–31

Plenty, and a few things are better on these days:

  1. Walk the moat and outer park (free, any time). Shoot the keep from the northwest corner of the moat at golden hour.
  2. Free projection mapping, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. The 2026–27 show is planned for December 12 to February 14, per Matsumoto City’s procurement notice. Last season the city’s X account said it was “lit every day from 18:00 to 22:00 during the period”, and we found no New Year suspension notices for 2025–26. Nightly operation over December 29 – January 3, 2027 isn’t confirmed yet, and the organizers can pause shows for bad weather or earthquakes. Each cycle runs about 12 minutes (a main show of roughly 9 minutes plus a 3-minute sub-show), with free street illuminations on Daimyocho-dori and Chitose Bridge from 5:00 p.m.
  3. Nakamachi and Nawate streets. White-walled kura storehouses and riverside stalls. Some shops close from December 31 to January 3, but the streets are photogenic regardless; our walking tour guide maps a route.
  4. Onsen. Asama Onsen and Utsukushigahara Onsen are 20–30 minutes away by bus or taxi, a good way to spend an evening around −5 °C.
  5. Day trips. Snow monkeys, Takayama or Shirakawa-go. For the snow monkeys, the Nagano: Snow Monkeys, Zenkoji Temple & Sake Day Trip meets at Nagano Station, about 50 minutes from Matsumoto on the Shinano; it costs from about $103 and is rated 4.9/5 from 985 reviews. Check that your holiday date is bookable.

Our Matsumoto Castle in winter guide covers the light show, the snow odds and the day trips across the whole season.

Hatsumōde (first shrine visit) near the castle

Matsumoto keeps a strong ninen-mairi (two-year visit) custom: you’re at the shrine as the old year ends and the new one begins. The times below are from the 2025–26 season; confirm them for 2026–27.

  • Yohashira Shrine (四柱神社): 5 minutes from the castle on Nawate-dori, and the city’s busiest. December 31, 3:00 p.m.: year-end great purification and Joya-sai. January 1, 7:00 a.m.: Saitan-sai (New Year rite). The peak crush runs roughly from 11:00 p.m. on December 31 to 2:00 a.m. on January 1, and daytime January 1–3 is busy too. Early morning is calmest.
  • Fukashi Shrine (深志神社, “Fukashi Tenjin”): quieter and more atmospheric. A bonfire for burning old amulets from 11:00 p.m., Joya-sai at 11:30 p.m., Saitan-sai at midnight with a great drum, New Year lucky charms from 10:00 p.m., and in past years free sake from midnight. Its link to the Ame-ichi’s origins makes it a good pairing with the January market.
  • Matsumoto Shrine (松本神社): next to the castle’s north side. In 2025–26 its youth group handed out toshikoshi soba, pork miso soup and cotton candy from 11:00 p.m. on December 31.
  • Okamiya Shrine (岡宮神社): one of the region’s biggest bonfires, lit at 11:45 p.m., plus a purifying ring to walk through at midnight.

Our pick: Fukashi Shrine for the bonfire and the midnight drum, then a short walk to Yohashira to feel the crowd.

Where to see the first sunrise (hatsuhinode)

The Joyama Park observation deck (城山公園), about 2 km northwest of the castle, has no closing time and gives a 360° view over the basin to the Northern Alps and Utsukushigahara. Next door, Alps Park works too and has toilets. Sunrise on January 1 is around 7:00 a.m. If the sky is clear and cold, the Alps glow pink at dawn (morgenrot), often the year’s most beautiful view in Matsumoto. The castle itself doesn’t open until 10:00 a.m. on January 1.

The Ame-ichi candy market in January 2027

Provisionally Saturday January 9 to Sunday January 10, 2027, 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The date comes from the Matsumoto Shopping Street Federation’s event calendar, which marks it “予定” (planned); confirm in December.

The Ame-ichi grew out of an Edo-period salt market held on January 11 by the priest of today’s Fukashi Shrine. Expect:

  • a national candy expo at Nakamachi Kura-chic-kan (10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in 2026)
  • a samurai tug-of-war (Shiotori Gassen) between “Uesugi” and “Takeda” teams
  • a Seven Lucky Gods procession handing out candy
  • a traffic-free pedestrian zone downtown on the Sunday

It’s a good reason to extend a New Year trip by a week.

Trains to Matsumoto over New Year

Very busy on peak days, so reserve early.

  • Limited Express Azusa (Tokyo/Shinjuku–Matsumoto) is all reserved seats. JR East’s press release of December 16, 2025 (figures as of December 15, covering December 26 to January 4) showed 150,000 seats reserved out of 390,000 available on the Chuo Line Azusa/Kaiji/Fuji Excursion group, 105% of the previous year. Across JR East, the outbound peak was December 30 (about 158,000 seats reserved) and the return peak was January 3 (about 160,000).
  • Limited Express Shinano (Nagoya–Matsumoto) ran all-reserved over New Year 2025–26, per JR Central’s announcement reported by Kyodo-affiliated media. Expect the same.
  • Timing: travel out on December 31 or January 1 (often quieter) and back on January 2 or January 4–5. Seats open one month ahead at 10:00 a.m.

Our Tokyo to Matsumoto Castle guide covers the route, fares and rail passes.

Town Sneaker buses at New Year

They run. Alpico’s official timetable says the North Course (castle and Kaichi School) runs on the weekend and holiday timetable from December 29 to January 3, and the East and South courses “operate normally”. The ¥500 one-day pass also gives museum and castle discounts. Some regular city routes stop entirely on January 1. Walking from the station takes about 15–20 minutes.

Driving is a poor choice. There are no free municipal car parks. The city’s Otemon multi-story car park closed on January 1, 2026 and ran from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on December 31 (normal hours 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., ¥150 per 30 minutes). An aggregator relaying the 2026 castle notice said the Kaichi lot was free on New Year days, but we couldn’t verify this against the official notice.

Weather in Matsumoto in early January

Cold, dry and usually sunny. January averages a high of about 5°C (41°F) and a low of about −5°C (23°F), according to Japan Meteorological Agency normals for 1991–2020, and clear mornings can drop below −10°C. Snow in town is usually light and melts by midday, so a snowy-keep photo is a bonus, not a given.

Pack thermals, gloves, a hat and thick socks. You take your shoes off inside the keep, and the wooden floors are freezing.

Restaurants and soba shops over New Year

Opening is mixed, so plan your January 1 meals.

  • December 31 (toshikoshi soba night): many soba shops do a brisk lunch and close early. Book or go before 2:00 p.m., or join the free soba at Matsumoto Shrine from 11:00 p.m. (2025–26 precedent).
  • January 1: many independent restaurants close (Iidaya-ken by the station, for example, lists New Year’s Day as its regular holiday). Restaurants in station buildings such as MIDORI follow the building’s hours, and convenience stores are open 24 hours.
  • January 2–3: more places reopen, and department-store fukubukuro lucky-bag sales draw crowds.

Shops set their holiday hours individually each December, so check Google Maps on the day.

Booking a hotel for New Year in Matsumoto

Book early for December 30 to January 2. Rates typically jump to peak levels, and ryokan with New Year osechi dinners sell out first. We couldn’t find reliable 2026–27 price data, so book a refundable room now and re-check rates in November. For value, stay January 3–5, when rates fall back and the castle runs normal hours.
