Matsumoto Castle, Sake & Local Bites Walking Tour

About This Experience

Discover a more personal side of Matsumoto on a relaxed walking tour that brings together castle history, local sake, nostalgic streets, and a light Japanese snack.

Your experience begins at Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most beautiful original castles. With its striking black exterior, wooden interior, and dramatic mountain backdrop, the castle is one of the most iconic sights in the region. As you explore the castle area with your local guide, hear stories from Japan’s feudal past and learn why Matsumoto Castle has been treasured for centuries.

After the castle, continue into the local streets of Matsumoto and visit a small sake tasting spot with a warm, home-like atmosphere. This is not a large commercial brewery or a polished tourist facility. It feels more like stepping into a local home — almost like visiting a grandmother’s house in town. The atmosphere is simple, friendly, and deeply local, making it a memorable stop for travelers who want to experience the everyday character of Matsumoto rather than only its famous landmarks.

Enjoy a relaxed sake tasting and learn about Japanese drinking culture in an easygoing way. Your guide will help explain the flavors, local background, and how sake is enjoyed in Japan, so even first-time sake drinkers can feel comfortable.

The tour then continues through Nawate Street and Nakamachi Street, two of Matsumoto’s most atmospheric walking areas. Nawate Street has a playful, nostalgic charm with small shops, local snacks, and old-town details. Nakamachi is known for its preserved storehouse-style buildings, white walls, black lattice, craft shops, and calm historic atmosphere.

Along the way, enjoy a light Japanese snack and discover small details you might easily miss on your own — local stories, hidden corners, traditional architecture, and the slower rhythm of everyday life in Matsumoto.

This tour is ideal for travelers who want more than just a quick castle visit. It offers a gentle mix of history, local flavor, sake culture, and old streets in a compact, easy-to-enjoy walking experience.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 6 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

Great guide, and interesting areas. Saki tasting in 400 year with old Saki company was exceptional.

— Marcus, May 24,

It was a great experience, I thank Masa for the opportunity, he takes pictures of you and you can ask him for information or something in particular. The great thing is that he cares about you and waits for you and tells you where there is water. The sake tasting was good. Thanks Masa

The guide was very nice and gave me lots of suggestions about where to go after the tour. The food was great and it was also good that the guide asked me beforehand what I had already tried. The visit to the castle was also great, he had a lot of knowledge about the castle and its history. The sake was interesting, I was able to try lots of sake. My absolute favorite is the one that goes well with cheese.
